Chapter 14

ZACH

One full day with Smith and Star has me spoiled rotten for attention. I want them with me all the time. I've become addicted to their laughter and smiles in a way I didn't think possible. I'm consumed by thoughts of how to make them happy in all the best ways. Smith might be Daddy when we're alone, but I want to be the best boy for him always and that means keeping them happy and well loved.

On the second day of my break, I decide to surprise them with donuts from my favorite place in town. I sneak out of the house before the sun comes up, then head towards Riley's Place. They have the best donuts in town, hands down.

The drive there is fairly quick since there isn't much traffic out yet. When I open the glass door, their signature door alarm goes off to match the Star Wars theme. It brings a grin to my face. That grin only gets bigger when I see the owner, Linh, putting a fresh tray of croissants in the display case.

"Good morning!" she tells me, her smile bright as ever.

"Morning, Linh. How are you today?"

She laughs lightly. "Very good. You hungry?"

I nod as I peruse the food. What would Star and Daddy like to eat? Smith told me they didn't have allergies or anything, but I've been very careful about watching what they do and don't take in. I want to learn all their favorites. While I might not be able to cook for them, I can surely get takeout to fill the need.

"I'm getting a bit more today. I've got two other people to feed."

Linh's eyes light up. "You find you a good man? He takes care of you?"

Now it's my turn to laugh, though mine is more nervous than carefree. Linh pulls no punches when she speaks, so I don't know why I'm surprised she's calling me out so blatantly. Others would see me and think I'm a big, strong firefighter who can take care of himself. Linh sees me and knows the truth. I'm keeping it together by luck and duct tape.

"I have. He's got a daughter. They're both still asleep."

Linh claps her hands. "Oh, yes! Family. Perfect for you. Good stepdad. I have just the thing."

She keeps mumbling as she steps back into the kitchen for whatever she's looking for. I peruse the case while she's away. My order is near complete in my head when she comes back out with a small white box.

"This for the girl. No charge. Extra special for you to take. Spoil." She nods rapidly before whipping open a bag to take my order.

Once we're all done and I'm overloaded with food, I wave to Linh and promise to bring Daddy and Star back really soon. I know if I don't, she'll show up at the station with donuts and a bribe for the guys to get the information she needs. Linh's like my food mom, if such a thing existed. She feeds me and mothers me from a distance.
